Filmschool includes how to avoid lens flare. Any landscape photographer is taught how to avoid flare.
Use a filter. Whoops! I left my polarizer at home.
Keep your lens away from the sun. Not likely for a sunset composition.
Use a hood. Not available given space limits.
Answer-Embrace the flare! Compose for what you have, rather than what you
want. The natural light gave me the contrast and the detail. The fact of a total blowout by the sun in its area worked out. This is my favorite of 50 images.
